WEST SIDE STORY takes place on the West Side of New York City during the last days of summer 1957. It tells the story of star-crossed lovers, Tony and Maria, and two rival street gangs: the Jets, made up of native New Yorkers, and the Sharks, a group of young Puerto Ricans. The Jets, led by Riff, and the Sharks, led by Bernardo, both want to control the same neighbourhood. Maria is Bernardo’s sister and has recently arrived from Puerto Rico to marry his friend, Chino.

At a school dance attended by both the Jets and the Sharks, Riff challenges Bernardo to meet after the dance to determine a place and the weapons to use for their "rumble". In the meantime, Tony meets and falls in love with Maria and they pledge their love for each other.

As the rumble is about to begin, Tony rushes in and tries to stop it. Bernardo, enraged that Tony is making advances to his sister, pushes him and switchblades appear. In the struggle, Riff is killed by Bernardo; Tony grabs Riff’s knife and stabs and kills Bernardo.

Chino tells Maria that Tony has killed Bernardo. Meanwhile, Tony seeks refuge in Doc’s drugstore basement as Chino is after him. Anita, Maria’s friend and Bernardo’s girlfriend, agrees to warn Tony that Chino is after him. However, at the drugstore, Anita is taunted by the Jets and, in a rage, she tells them Chino has killed Mario out of revenge.

Tony is devastated and wanders the streets looking for Chino. At midnight, he discovers Maria, but Chino appears from behind a building and fatally shoots Tony.
