A good chance Mirvishes could still rock Toronto: Success of Wicked

QUEEN FOR A DAY: Chill out, Scaramouche; you still may get to do that fandango.

Despite a recent announcement that Evita had replaced We Will Rock You as the final selection of the current Mirvish subscription season, there still is a very good chance the Queen musical may also appear on our local stages this summer.

There were initial reports that the British producers of the project were gun-shy of coming to Toronto because of the premature closings of The Producers and Hairspray.

However, the incredibly strong advance ticket sale for Wicked has caused all concerned to reconsider.

Don't be surprised if an announcement comes out in the New Year revealing that when the mercury starts rising this summer, the Freddy Mercury factor will be in the ascendant as well, in one of the Mirvish Theatres.

Get out those Bic lighters and brush up those harmonies on "We Are The Champions," okay?

WICKED NICK: The highly anticipated national tour of Wicked, which starts performances in Toronto on March 8, will feature a completely American cast, with a solitary exception.

Nicholas Dromard, recently in the company of Hairspray, will be one of the singing and dancing Oz-ians when the show takes flight at the Canon Theatre.

The Ottawa-born Dromard first came to local attention in the 1999 Stratford Production of West Side Story and then garnered critical and popular acclaim for his performance as Eddie in the original Toronto cast of Mamma Mia!

In recent seasons, he's been lighting up the Broadway stages in Oklahoma! and The Boy From Oz, where Hugh Jackman would affectionately pat his bum with a pair of maracas every night during the curtain call. Mr. Dromard assures me it was all strictly platonic.
